Book Talk Review; Night Shifts Black

Night Shifts Black by Alyson Santos
Publication Date: March 20, 2016
Genres: Contemporary Fiction, Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

His name is Luke. But nobody knows that. He was a celebrated musician before he gave up music. But nobody knows that either. They also don’t know he’s twenty-seven, that he used to have an infectious laugh, and that he’s way too young to be widowed. They certainly don’t know the rest of his tragic story. All they know is that he comes into their cafĂ© at the same time every morning and stares at the same chair at the same table. They know he’s strange. They know he interrupts their breakfast with a cold blast of air as he hovers in the doorway, mustering the courage to confront a piece of furniture.

No one asks why. No one cares. He’s fine with that. He’s done with life.
This isn’t even his story anymore.
It’s actually Callie’s, the young writer who sat in his chair one day.

REVIEW:
I almost never judge a book by its cover. But when I saw Night Shifts Black, between the title, the image and the blurb I was completely drawn in.
So when I was asked if I'd like to receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review, I jumped at the chance and I am so glad that I did!

Alyson Santos wrote a phenomenal story that reached deep into my soul. I don't want to give anything away because EVERY. SINGLE. THING. that happens from start to finish is significant, so I'm not going to summarize beyond the blurb. What I can tell you is that I connected with the characters in this book SO strongly that I smiled when they smiled, laughed out loud when they laughed, cried when they cried and felt their pain and agony when they were battling their inner demons. I felt their happiness, confusion, depression and fear. And I felt their love, and the indestructible bond that they formed.

Night Shifts Black is a beautiful fictional story, but it deals with very real problems that thousands upon thousands of people deal with every day. This story is about friendship, the battle with inner demons, self acceptance and allowing others to help. And with this book, Alyson Santos gives me hope that there really are Callies in the world that care enough about the stranger in the café to reach out and help.
