Book Talk Review; Dreamland

One of the most powerful Books By Sarah

 Wake up, Caitlin

Ever since she started going out with Rogerson Biscoe, Caitlin seems to have fallen into a semiconscious dreamland where nothing is quite real.
Rogerson is different from anyone Caitlin has ever known.
  He's magnetic.
  He's compelling.
 He's dangerous.
Being with him makes Caitlin forget about everything else--her missing sister, her withdrawn mother, her lackluster life.
But what happens when being with Rogerson becomes a larger problem than being without him?

This book is an emotional one. It is one that many teenagers go through. Many people in general actually.

I couldn't read this book without crying.

Caitlin is in a dream-state,  since her sister Cassandra left, and her mother became withdrawn, Caitlin met Rogerson Biscoe.

At first it's the distraction that she needed. With cheer-leading, a new boyfriend, and new friends, Caitlin tries to pick up her life.

But then something happens, something that changes Caitlin.

Caitlin struggles. She has that internal struggle that every girl who goes through something similar does. Is it her fault?

 Can it be fixed?
 If only...

If only what Caitlin? If only you would have opened your eyes. If only you would have challenged before it was too late.

But none of that matters now.

None of that matters, you can't change the fact that it happened. You can only let it make you stronger.

Nothing hurts worse than thinking it was your fault.

This book is powerful, it sends the message that many of us try to ignore. While many discredit books that deal with this type of subject matter. We need these books.

We need to face the fact that life is NOT all sunshine and roses. Sarah took a big step when she wrote this book.

She wrote about one girl's struggle, and the confusion on how fast a person can change, from someone you know, to someone you don't.

*Note- warning, this book deals with sensitive subject matter.

*Quote- "I concentrated on reaching the surface, feeling the water break across my face as I burst through it into the air to finally breathe on my own." -Caitlin

 Excerpt 1

My entire body pulses in the wake of his touch.
His words “if you were mine” keep circling around in my head, and with each rotation, something inside me grows.
He makes me feel happy and less broken.
I feel I could take on the world as long as he’s beside me.
Whatever he is, I don’t care.
I’ve never felt anything like this, and I’ll go to Hell and back to keep it.
Regardless of what happens to me, I have to protect him.
I have to keep him safe, always.
He grins and squeezes my hand again.
My body responds with such intensity, I almost feel as if I were floating.
I don’t want it to ever stop.
I want to stay strong.
 I want to be brave.
I want to feel safe.
He gives me all of that.
I want to hold him forever, even if it’s only his hand.
“Tomorrow,” he says, pulling me from my thoughts. “I’ll find a way to see you.”

 Excerpt 2

 My heart flutters.
I really do like MJ.
I blush and pop a few grapes into my mouth.
As ecstatic as that makes me feel, I still don’t know, fully, if I can trust him—not until I know what he is.
“So ... you still haven’t answered my original question. Government experiment, superhero, or something else. Which is it?”
He sighs, shaking his head. “I wasn’t created in a lab somewhere.”
 “What about an alien?”
“Wouldn’t that fall under the category of magician?”
“Magicians are usually fake. Warlocks and witches could be real. So are you one?”
“No.” Stumped, I rest my chin on my hand and huff in exasperation.
“Give up?” he asks.
“No. But I’ve made some good progress on my list.”
 “You have a list?”
“Uh huh.” I toss a few more grapes into my mouth.
“Of what you think I might be?” I nod. “I don’t suppose you could just let it go?” I narrow my eyes at him.
“If I did a bunch of crazy things that you couldn’t explain, would you let it go?” He smirks and shakes his head.
 “You win.

 Excerpt 3

“Now say if you had changed even one of those things, your destiny would be completely different.” I know which fork I would choose to redo if I could.
It’s the same one I’ve regretted time and time again.
If I could go back, I would have never rejected his first kiss.
 Damien smiles.
“Say, for example, this alternate-reality dream of yours is one where we kissed the first night. Everything would have been different between us. However, it is because you rejected my kiss that I looked at you differently. It is because you were sent away that I missed you. It is because you were promised to another man that I came there that night, which ultimately led to us being together now. As much as I wished we had kissed the first night, I am glad we did not. I, for one, like this path much better.”

Book Talk Review; Keeping The Moon

It's time for another Book Talk on a Book by Sarah Dessen!

Never underestimate the power of friendship.

When Colie goes to spend the summer at the beach, she doesn’t expect much.

But Colie didn’t count on meeting Morgan and Isabel.

Through them, she learns what true friendship is all about, and finally starts to realize her potential.

And that just might open the door to her first chance at love. . . .

Keeping the moon is the story of fifteen-year-old Colie, who is staying with her eccentric aunt Mira for the summer.

What is there to do in Colby, North Carolina?

But then Colie gets a job. Working at the Last Chance Bar and Grill she meets Morgan and Isabel, best friends who couldn't be anymore different.

She also meets Norman, the sweet, quiet, and talented Norman.

Colie has spent her life hiding and being ashamed of what she's not.

First it was because she was fat, then after she lost the weight it was becasue she gained a reputation that she didn't deserve.

This book really hits the mark on discovering who you are and who your friends are.

After watching Morgan and Isabel working through everything, their differences and similarities, after learning how to embrace the difference and accept who you are, Colie begins to realize, that it doesn't matter how others see you. It's how you act and how you see yourself, how those close to you see you, that really matters.

This book is good for all those girls who rather listen to those other people, the ones who don't know you at all, than to those who see through your dyed hair, lip ring, and fuck off attitude.

Friendship, and embracing is what is really important in life, and that is what Sarah captures in this book.

Sarah really embraces the thoughts of friendship in this book.

Appreciating who you really are is important in this book.

Letting love find you, in the most unexpected places is what's important in this book.

 And in life.

*Quote- "I turned my gaze back up to the sky, and put my faith in that moon and its return." -Colie

"You're not the kind of person who smiles for nothing, Colie. I have to earn every one." -Norman

"Colie, you should never be surprised when people treat you with respect. You should expect it." -Isabel

My boyfriend broke my heart but refuses to let me go.

I don’t believe in fate and I don’t believe in happily-ever-afters, but for some reason, I still hope.

Live, even with a tainted spirit.
Long for my other half to come back to me.
Risk another broken heart, just to feel loved again.
And refuse to let another horror break me.

In the face of my most recent tragedy, I have to decide whether forgiveness is something I can give. But even if that’s an option, can I be forgiven?

Book Talk Review; Someone Like You

It's the Book Talk for Someone Like You a heart-touching book by the talented Sarah Dessen

The world is a terrible place not to have a best friend.

Halley was always content to follow in her wake.

Then Scarlett's boyfriend died, and Scarlett learned that she was pregnant.

Now Halley has to find the strength to take the lead and help Scarlett get through it.

Because true friendship is a promise you keep forever.

It's junior year. Halley and Scarlett are as inseparable as they always have been. Only this year, something else is keeping them close together.

Halley gets a call while she's away for the summer. The call that changes their lives forever.

One night, everything changes for Halley and Scarlett. They manage through one heart-breaking obstacle, only to be confronted with another.

Add in Macon. A boy who seems all wrong. A boy who gets to Halley. A boy who changes Halley, one who helps her be the person she is.

The school year isn't anything like Halley and Scarlett expected.

Dealing with a pregnancy the two best friends embark on separate and similar journeys.

Keeping with the same Sarah Dessen writing style, this book tells the story of life, love, freindship, and self-discovery.

It's a common theme in Sarah's books. Her books explore being a teenager and coming into your own. with hardships, friendships, relationships, and real life problems. Sarah's books are so rateable to teens. Whether or not you know what the character is experiencing, you can still connect to the emotions from inside the book.

This was the first Sarah book that I read, and it really caused me to go out and read all the other books by her that I could get my hands on.

Please tune-in when I Book Talk all of Sarah's other books!

*Quote- "No matter how strong or weak I was, she was a part of me, as crucial as my own heart. I would never be strong enough, in all my life, to do without her." -Halley

"The language of solace , and comets, and the girls we all become, in the end." -Halley
Someone Like You's old cover. I love them both

Rhiannon drew herself up to her full five feet plus two whole inches, lifted her pudgy chin and nose in the air, and walked into the conference room.
Inside, a black-suited security team stood behind five men sitting at a conference table.
The seated guys looked like a staff meeting on Olympus: like the platinum-blond Sun God Apollo shone brilliant in his beauty beside radiant Eros, God of Love, who slept beside the seductive devil, black-haired Thanatos, who was the deification of Death, and two more blazingly beautiful demi- gods.
Rhiannon stopped hard, nearly catching her high heels on the carpeting.
Oh my God. Those guys had been on the cover of last month’s Rolling Stone—all shirtless in the cover photo because they were beyond ripped, they were frickin’ shredded— because they had released two indie, MP3-only albums that had gone platinum.
The article’s headline was War Breaks Out over Killer Valentine because three major-label recording companies had launched a vicious bidding war for their next work.
 Holy cow.
Well, she wouldn’t have to worry about anyone looking at her on the stage.

Book Talk Review; That Summer

Hey y'all! So I know I've sucked lately, and haven't gotten around to doing any Book Talks. Well, I'm here to make up for it!

That Summer by the talented Sarah Dessen

 The more things change...
For fifteen-year-old Haven, life is changing too quickly. She's nearly six feet tall, her father is getting remarried, and her sister—the always perfect Ashley—is planning a wedding of her own.
Haven wishes things could just go back to the way they were.
Then an old boyfriend of Ashley's reenters the picture, and through him, Haven sees the past for what it really was, and comes to grips with the future.

I think that this was a good book. It has a good message of growing up.

Honestly this is my least favorite Sarah Dessen. It doesn't do it for me like her other books have.

This wasn't my first Sarah book and I'm glad it wasn't, because I probably wouldn't have read any other books if it was.

Haven is growing up. Things are changing. Too much too quickly. Her father is getting remarried to the 'weather pet' Lorna Queen. And her older sister is getting married to the boring Lewis Warsher.

Haven feels tethered to her mother. She feels that it's her job to now be the protection, to be the perfect daughter. But she can't be perfect when she doesn't even know who she is anymore.

Everything is changing, no more married parents, no more little girls, no more perfect sisters. No more normal life.

One summer changes everything, and after the reappearance of one of Ashley's ex-boyfriends. The one that Haven thought was perfect. The one she thought was perfect for her sister, Haven longs to go back to that perfect summer. The summer before the truth of her father's affair came out, where her mother and sister were alike in their dramatic outbursts.

 The summer that seemed perfect.

But Sumner helps Haven realize that her perfect summer wasn't so perfect after all.

Haven can't seem to stop growing.

Her perfect vision of summer comes to a new light.

Her perfect slightly dramatic sister is getting married to the boring Lewis.

Her father is married to the Weather Pet and seems to be growing more hair.
Haven has lost sight of who she is and who she wants to be.

She is drowning in her memories of what happened yesterday, she can't remember to live in today.

For this being one of my least favorite Sarah books. Which is hard to say because I think Sarah is an amazing author. She is one of the best authors I have ever read. Her books are about, love, life, growing up, and discovering yourself. Something that all teens, pre-teens, and adults need to read once in a while.

I enjoyed this book, just because I didn't seem to enjoy it as much as her others does not mean that I didn't think it was good.

On Goodreads I gave it a two star out of five. Which is amazing, I think, Because I can't remember that last time I did that.

Haven wasn't the best main character, and that has a lot to do with it. I don't know if it was because of her age of what. I think I was about Haven's age when I read this book.  Or maybe a year younger.

The story itself was great, I just wasn't too enthused about Haven.

My Next Book Talk will be on Someone Like You, the very first Sarah Book that I've read.

I don't have these on my kindle, I have them in paperback, old covers, I really want the new covers too. I think they are beautiful. Especially This Lullaby's Cover.

I don't have quotes handy like I would if I had the kindle versions. But I was able to flip through and pick out a quote that I love.

*Quote- "The first boy was always the hardest." -Haven

Book Talk Review; Shadow Dancer

Shadow Dancer

Addison Kline

Released September 12th, 2014

*Note- I received an ARC Copy of this book for an honest Review Tour Review

Some secrets should just stay buried.
On the day Tristan Morrow is born her mother goes missing, prompting an investigation that produces no solid leads.

Fast forward 15 years, and the Morrow family still doesn't know the truth behind Catherine Morrow’s disappearance.

When 15 year old Tristan is required to write a biography on her mother for a school assignment, she learns the truth about her mother’s fate, and is hell-bent upon finding out who was responsible for her death.
But when Tristan herself goes missing too, everyone is suspect, even her own father and boyfriend.

Set in rural Fox Hollow, PA, Shadow Dancer unravels a web of lies, deceit, madness and corruption. Can investigators crack the case before Tristan meets the same fate as her mother?
And who is responsible for the disappearances?
There is much uncertainty as the investigation unfolds, but there is one thing that is certain: Tristan Morrow holds the master key to the entire riddle.

Honestly, I can say that I would give this book a three out of five star review.
I liked the idea behind the plot. The Blurb make it sound more mysterious and more dangerous.
I just felt like I couldn't connect easily with the characters or the story.
I enjoyed where Addison was taking it, but some of the writing didn't flow as neatly as it could have.
The book was a good, one, it has a lot of promise and it easily could attract those readers who like mysteries and who like reading in suspense.
This book is fast pace, and tells the story from multiple points of view. Which isn't a bad thing, it just moves so fast between characters it's hard to keep up.
The overall story is one that kept my attention. Regardless on how it was executed I was able to read the story and follow along to it.
Addison knew where she wanted to take her story, and it shows in the product and quality in it.
The story isn't what I have a hard time reviewing. I like the premise of it.
But the execution could have been better. I felt that Addison's writing style didn't do this book justice.
I would recommend this book. It certainly is  interesting, I like the mystery and the suspense. This book kept me on my toes, and there were a few moments when my heart lurched in my chest because if an intense moment.
Overall this book deserves a three. If for nothing more than the plot and how Addison tried to get the plot across, while having to force all the other elements into it as well.
I give her kudos to that. Because the plot is so complex, it would be hard for any author to do that so I admire that Addison was able to tackle something like that.

Character interview with Tristan

JJ- Tristan! How’s it going?

Tristan: Who are you and how did you get in here?

JJ- I’m JJ Penn with Elkhart Radio 104.9 and we are live on the air!

Tristan: You’ve got to be kidding me.

JJ- I’m definitely not, so how are you doing today?

Tristan: Pretty good. Just trying to finish up this assignment before Kendricks fails me.

JJ: You’re a smart girl, I’m sure you’ll pull it off.

Tristan: You don’t know my English teacher.

An interruption from the background jars the microphone as a group of boys stampede in the room.

Tommy: Tristan! Aren’t you done yet?

Blake: Come on! I want my bedroom back!

Shane (looking at JJ): Who the hell are you?! (Shane glances at his cousins Tommy and Blake) Who

is that?!

JJ: (Clears throat) I’m JJ Penn from Elkhart Radio 104.9, and you might be?

Shane: Err... Shane Fitzpatrick. Tristan’s cousin.

The three boys eye JJ and Tristan suspiciously.

Tommy: We’ll be back later...

JJ returns his focus to Tristan, as he readjusts the microphone on the table.

JJ- Brothers?

Tristan- The dark haired boys are... the loud ginger is my cousin.

JJ- So Tristan, readers want to know what makes you tick. Would you mind answering a few

Tristan- Sure, I guess so. I really need to get back to this assignment though.

JJ- Great. Okay. First up, what is your full name?

Tristan- Tristan Elizabeth Morrow

JJ- See? That was pretty painless. Are you the youngest in your family?

Tristan- Yes the youngest of six kids in this house... and the only girl.

JJ- Does that annoy you? Being surrounded by brothers?

Tristan- We’re pretty close, actually. Yeah, they get on my nerves, but it would be lonely without

them... and in case you haven’t noticed, I’m not exactly the lace and frills kind of girl...

JJ- What are three of your biggest downfalls?

I’m stubborn.... I’ve got a temper... and I’m a bit of a perfectionist.

JJ- One of them, huh? What’s it like living up here in No Man’s Land?

Tristan- No man’s land? This is Morrow land. It’s nice and quiet. Just how I like it. I’m surprised you

drove all the way up here just to ask me some questions.

JJ- Cavegat Pass is no joke, that is for sure. Okay, let’s dig a little deeper. What do you want to do

after high school?

Tristan- Go to college. I’d like to be a veterinarian.

JJ- Very nice, okay next question. What are three of your biggest pet peeves?

Tristan- Hmm.... Not having enough personal space. Unannounced visitors. Secrets.

JJ- You don’t like secrets?

Tristan- No. I want to know the whole truth... not just what you think I can handle. I’m a big girl.

JJ- Name three of your biggest dreams that you hope to accomplish.

Tristan- I don’t have dreams. I have goals that I will achieve. I plan to graduate from Steeplechase a

year early with a GPA of 3.8 or better. I plan to attend Bloomsburg University then Bucknell. Then I’d

like to open a practice in Elkhart.

JJ- Would you offer your Dad a discount to care for his animals?

Tristan- Our animals, you mean? And I would treat them free of charge.

JJ- That’s very generous of you. You must really like animals.

Tristan- It’s something that I am passionate about.

JJ- Okay, next- Name one of your biggest fears?

Tristan- I don’t know what I’d do if something were to ever happen to one of my family members...

That haunts my dreams at night.

JJ- Okay. Last question. Do you know what the author, Addison Kline has in store for you?

Tristan- That girl’s got secrets and she’s not telling me anything!

JJ- Thanks for your time today Tristan. Okay folks, that’s all for today. Next time, we will be sitting

down with Tristan’s father Jack Morrow to see what makes him tick. From what I hear in town, he’s

not the kind of guy you want to get on the wrong side of. Hopefully I don’t piss him off! Til next time.

JJ Out!
