Book Talk Diana Gabaldon

I have found a new author to obsess over. I have fallen in love with Diana and her amazing writing.

Diana is the author of the Outlander Series: Outlander, Dragonfly In Amber, Voyager, Drums Of Autumn, Fiery Cross, A Breath Of Snow And Ashes, An Echo In The Bone, and Written In My Own Heart's Blood.

Diana Gabaldon is the author of the award-winning, #1 NYT-bestselling OUTLANDER novels, described by Salon magazine as “the smartest historical sci-fi adventure-romance story ever written by a science Ph.D. with a background in scripting “Scrooge McDuck” comics.”

The series is published in 26 countries and 23 languages, and includes a nonfiction (well, relatively) companion volume, THE OUTLANDISH COMPANION, which provides details on the settings, background, characters, research, and writing of the first novels in the series. Gabaldon (it’s pronounced “GAA-bull-dohn”—rhymes with “stone”) has also written several books in a sub-series featuring Lord John Grey (a major minor character from the main series): LORD JOHN AND THE PRIVATE MATTER, LORD JOHN AND THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE BLADE, LORD JOHN AND THE HAND OF DEVILS, and LORD JOHN AND THE SCOTTISH PRISONER.

Returning to her comic-book roots, she has also written a graphic novel titled THE EXILE (set within the OUTLANDER universe and featuring the main characters from OUTLANDER), but told from the viewpoint of Jamie Fraser and his godfather, Murtagh. The graphic novel is illustrated by Hoang Nguyen, and published by Del-Rey.

The eighth and most recent major novel in the OUTLANDER series, WRITTEN IN MY OWN HEART’S BLOOD, was released on June 10, 2014 in the U.S.A. and Canada. The book made its debut as number one on the New York Times bestseller list in the hardcover category and combined e-book and hardcover category! And the book is also a bestseller in Canada.

Diana’s current writing projects include the ninth major novel in the OUTLANDER series, as yet untitled, and a second volume of THE OUTLANDISH COMPANION. She is also serving as a Co-Producer and advisor for the Outlander TV series produced by the Starz network and Tall Ship Productions, which is based on her novels.

Dr. Gabaldon holds three degrees in science: Zoology, Marine Biology, and a Ph.D. in Quantitative Behavioral Ecology, (plus an honorary degree as Doctor of Humane Letters, which entitles her to be “Diana Gabaldon, Ph.D., D.H.L.” She supposes this is better than “Diana Gabaldon, Phd.X,”) and spent a dozen years as a university professor with an expertise in scientific computation before beginning to write fiction. She has written scientific articles and textbooks, worked as a contributing editor on the MacMillan ENCYCLOPEDIA OF COMPUTERS, founded the scientific-computation journal SCIENCE SOFTWARE QUARTERLY, and has written numerous comic-book scripts for Walt Disney. None of this has anything whatever to do with her novels, but there it is.

Diana and her husband, Douglas Watkins, have three adult children and live mostly in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Cover Reveal; Sins of Sevin

(A standalone)

A Contemporary Romance novel

New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author Penelope Ward
RELEASE DATE: September 21, 2015
From the New York Times bestselling author of Stepbrother Dearest, comes a new forbidden STANDALONE romance.

What happens when the one you want is the only one you can’t have?

My name is Sevin.

Homeschooled and sheltered by my ultra-religious family, I was always taught that lust was a sin.

Elle was the girl who’d been carefully chosen for me.

After a long-distance courtship, I’d be moving into her family’s guesthouse so that we could get to know each other in the months before the wedding.

Boundaries were set: no inappropriate touching, no kissing, no sex before marriage.

I’d accepted those rules and my fate.

Until I met the one I wanted to sin with.

That was when restraint became a problem…especially since the one wasn’t Elle.

It was her sister, Evangeline.

You know what they say about best laid plans.
My name is Sevin, and I have sinned.

Told in alternating points of view, Sins of Sevin is a full-length standalone novel. Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. Only appropriate for adult readers age 18+.

Blog Tour; Autum Rising

Autumn Mahal and Hank Basara know they should stay away from each other. Both recovering from the loss of a mutual friend, and each bearing scars of their own, they know their love would look like a worn cliché, a trite romance novel for teens, some crappy made-for-TV movie languishing on your great aunt’s DVR.

But as summer gives way to September and flirtation leads to something deeper, they learn there are some types of love you cannot run from, no matter how hard you try to flee.

Hilarious, heartbreaking and hopeful, Autumn Rising is a novella about the happiness we ruin for ourselves, the truths we can’t hide with a filter, and that elusive and victorious moment when we let love rush in and carry us to the sky.
In a world of constant TMI, prepare to feel a story worth sharing – a story that will stay with you long after the summer fades to autumn.

Autumn Rising is the perfect follow up to The Summer Remains.

We meet both Autumn and Hank in The Summer Remains. They are part of Summer's Anti-Support Group, they are two of her best friends, even if they both have qualities that can drive a person mad.

Their story is one built on love, friendship, hope, and the things that make us all a little different.

Truthfully I didn't know what kind of romance we were going to get from these two misfit characters. It is a story that I won't forget. A little short for my taste, but then it is a novella. I would have loved to see more of them, but I'm glad that we get their story at all.

I loved the voice of Autumn, it is so clear and so real. Seth knows how to write a character that everybody can relate to.

It is easy to see how the characters fell in love, it is easy to see how they fell apart. There are so many things in this book that I could relate to.

It was a beautiful story that will stick with me for a long long time.

There's not much that I can say about this book. Just that it was beautiful and I love how Seth told this story. It was worth the read after experiencing The Summer Remains.

*Quote- "And so the girl who thought she was a pigeon turned into a canary."

"They met in the middle, and that middle became their own little heaven."

"They were healing each other, slowly but surely. Because if you can't heal alone, heal together."

"Maybe perfection was a dream that was forever just out of reach."

The Summer Remains

Twenty-four-year-old Summer Johnson knows two things.
The first is that due to a quickly worsening medical condition, she faces a risky surgery in three months’ time that may or may not end in her death.
The second is that she would like to fall in love before then.
As spring sinks into her namesake season on the Florida coastline, Summer plays the odds and downloads a new dating app - and after one intriguing message from a beautiful surfer named Cooper Nichols, it becomes clear that the story of what may be her last few months under the sun is about to be completely revised.
All she has to do now is write something worth reading.
Tender, honest, devastating and triumphant, The Summer Remains explores a very human battle being waged in a very digital age: the search for a love that will outlast this temporary borrowing of bones.
In an era when many feel compelled to share and re-share anything about everything, prepare to feel a love so special, you will want to hug it close and make it yours forever.

As the hours fly by, I drive closer to my doom. I begin to notice a weight in my body as if I’m being pulled towards my fate. My throat starts to constrict and it’s becoming hard to breath, I’m struggling for each ragged breath. Sweat beings to appear on my forehead and I have to pull over and loosen my tie. What the hell is wrong with me? My palms are sweating, and my heart races with loud, strong beats. The road in front of me becomes blurry, making it hard to keep my eyes open. What’s…going on with me?

Picking up my cell, I fumble with the phone until I find Doc’s number and click on it. She answers on the second ring. Forcing the words out of me…“Doc, something’s wrong with me. I…didn’t know who else to call. Please help me.”

“Where are you?”

Breathless, I answer, “I’m on the side of the road about four hours into my trip.” It’s becoming very difficult to answer her. I feel like I’m going to pass out.

“What trip? Where are you going?”

I grip my chest, trying to stop the pain. “You told me to look her up.”

“What are you talking about?”

Slightly frustrated at this point I force the words out. “My mother’s friend.”
“Oh. I didn’t mean you had to visit her just yet. Can you try to explain what’s going on?”

I describe my symptoms, and she explains that it’s just a panic attack. That everything is going to be fine. The trip has brought back so many memories. She tells me to close my eyes and find my happy place. So I do as instructed, and I find Anaya’s beautiful face. “Now take some long, slow breaths and tell me what you see.”

“Anaya and her golden brown eyes. Her beautiful chocolate brown hair. That sassy smirk on her face as she gazes helplessly in my eyes.”

“Perfect. What are you feeling now?”

“Good, now how about your other symptoms?”

“I’m starting to cool down and my breathing is returning to normal. My chest is loosening up too.”

“That’s great. You had your first panic attack. It’s probably brought on by the fact that you’re pushing yourself too fast. You needed time to warm up to the idea of going back home. But now that you’ve set yourself on this path, you need to face it. How long until you’re home?”

I shudder at the word home. “I should be there in about six hours or so.”

We have a thirteen year old daughter who is so smart and talented. I can’t believe how fast they grow up. She is turning into quite the young lady. She aspires to be so many things and I encourage them all. She loves to write songs, and has even tried her hand at writing a book. Maybe one day she will follow my example.

Being that I am from a small town, I have made some long lasting relationships. I have two best friends that I have known for most of my life. We have continued to stick together over the years and we are always there for one another. I couldn’t imagine my life without them.

Animal lover I’m not, but I have a headstrong dog named dozer, that is the absolute best-behaved dog I have ever seen, and a cat that drive me insane, but I love her nonetheless.

I have always aspired to be a neonatal nurse and I continue to work towards that goal. Maybe one day it will come true. However, writing has become my new favorite love.

I never would have dreamed that I would become a writer, but some really great people convinced me otherwise. Eventually I decided to give it a try and what do you know? I just finished writing my fourth book and I couldn’t be happier. I will continue to write in my spare time with hopes of it becoming a full time career at some point in my life. And I look forward to many more years of bring you the best books that I can.

Blitz; Lay Your Hands On Me

Brand-new New Adult Rock Star Romance
from USA Today-Bestselling Author Blair Babylon!

Xan Valentine, the rock star that Rolling Stone called “sex incarnate,” stands in the spotlight every night and sings love songs to the women in the audience. They swoon. They scream. They believe him. They don’t know him like Georgie does.

They’ve never seen him nearly beat two men to death until someone pulled him off. They’ve never seen the coldness in his dark eyes when he sat across a table, negotiating a contract that broke their hearts.

He’s never stolen into their bedroom at night, slid into their bed, and made love to them until dawn, and he’s never treated them like it never happened while the bitemarks on their backs and thighs were still sore.

They’ve never seen him play the violin like an angel.

Or a demon.

Georgie is officially in his band now, playing the keyboards, and every concert drives the music deeper into her soul. If Georgie leaves the protection of the band and Xan Valentine, the Russian mafia will kidnap and kill her. If she stays and plays in his band for just a few more weeks, Xan will pay for her college and law school.

If her heart can survive even one more night with him.

Excerpt from Lay Your Hands On Me

Xan Valentine, the rock star—and Georgie could tell that he was Xan by the arrogant tilt of his head and the jitter of his fingers drumming on the conference room table—pushed a thick contract across the table toward her. His long hair was tied back in a ponytail, and he wore a trim, blue business suit without a tie, his collar unbuttoned at his throat. Silver and steel chains at his throat sparkled white glints in the overhead fluorescent lights, and that green crystal earring dangled from his ear lobe.

He looked straight at her while he slid the contract over the wood like he was accusing her of something, his dark eyes level and still as he stared. White bandages wrapped his knuckles, but at least the bleeding must have stopped overnight.

Jonas, the band manager for Killer Valentine, sat on Xan’s left. He sat straight in his chair, his black suit pressed and smooth.

Georgie was alone on her side of the table. The chill air in the hotel leaked down the back of her tee shirt and up her short sleeves, raising goosebumps on her skin.

She picked up the stack of paper and riffled through it. “This is a lot of contract for just two months.”

“There’s a lot to do in a rock band,” Xan said.

He didn’t sneer, and he didn’t snarl. If anything, his businesslike tone sounded resigned.

“I’m not signing this until I read the whole thing. I want an attorney’s opinion on it, too. Do you have an electronic copy?”

Jonas slid a thumb drive across the table to her. “Here’s a PDF.”

“Thanks.” She crammed the stick into the back pocket of her jeans.

Xan said, “We need you to sign it before you play with the band again, and the next performance is two days from now.”

“I’m not signing something I haven’t read or don’t understand.” The sheaf of pages weighed in her hands.

“We have a show coming up. If you haven’t signed it by tomorrow morning, we have to cancel the show. If we cancel it—”

“I know. I know. The fans will post vomiting gifs and Killer Valentine will be ruined forever.” She flipped to the front page, which was mostly defining terms, like that Georgie was The Band Member, Killer Valentine, Inc. was The Band, and Mr. Alexandre Grimaldi de Valentinois was The Employer.

So Xan was the one who was paying her, not the band.

Georgie flipped more pages.

Xan folded his hands and looked down at his fingers. He didn’t look like he was trying to hide something, just waiting. Steel and black metal rings wound around his fingers, and thick chains dangled on his wrists near the cuffs of his suit jacket and clicked against the table when he moved his arms.

Georgie read further into the contract, slowing down when she got to The Band Member’s Duties.

The concerts were there, of course, including playing the music while sober and not under the influence of controlled substances.

That must be a new clause.

Her chest hurt for a minute. Rade had been a brilliant keyboard player, and hearing him play classical music on the piano would have been amazing. She had meant to ask him to play for her.

She sucked in a steadying breath and read on.

The terms of the contract ran until July thirty-first, a little over two months, the entire European leg of the tour.

After that, Georgie was free to move to Atlanta and Emory University, where she would resume her plan to go to law school and pay off her many, many debts, both financial and moral. There was an option to renew the contract for one-year terms after that, which made Georgie snort.

No way.

No fucking way was she sticking around after July thirty-first.

The next part was weird.

Georgie looked up at Xan and Jonas. Xan was still meditating on his clasped hands, but Jonas was scrolling through something on his phone. She asked, “What do you mean by ‘public relations engagements?’”

“Anything the band needs,” Xan said. His hands were still clasped on the table. “Radio interviews in the mornings by phone, studio interviews, clubs, other appearances.”

“I can’t do public appearances,” she said. “They’re still after me.”

The Butorins, a Russian mafia bratva, had tried to kidnap Georgie several times because she owed them eight million dollars. Her father had swindled them out of that money, and they felt that Georgie should pay up. Before they had found her, she had planned to first pay off the charities that her father had stolen from, but she liked breathing, too. If she were dead, she would never pay off all the charities.

Xan shook his head. “The public eye is the safest place for you, currently. Every attempt to kidnap you has been in private or at least away from cameras or crowds. Also, later in the contract, you’ll see that it’s not your responsibility to provide security. It’s ours. You’ll have Adrien, who is the most diligent and highly trained security person we have. You’ll have others, too. You’ll be safe.”

“I need to hide. I need locked doors between me and the Russian mob.”

He shook his head again, but his careful, methodical gesture didn’t exude the wild energy of Xan anymore. “You need to remain in the limelight. Witnesses are your best security.”

Even his English accent had switched to the high-society British of Alex de Valentinois, leaving behind the guttural, working-class accent of Xan Valentine. His switches dizzied Georgie, but Jonas didn’t even look like he had noticed.

Jonas and the rest of the band either didn’t hear the difference in Alex’s accents or else they didn’t know what they signified, not that Georgie could have exactly defined what they meant, either.

But she knew that he was Alex now.

She stole another peek at Jonas, who was still peering at his phone.

Not that she could call him Alex. Everybody around here only knew him as Xan and only called him Xan.

“I can’t do appearances,” she repeated.

Alex’s dark eyebrows twitched. “The band needs all its members to do appearances.”

“I’m not really a band member.”

Alex leaned across the table and tapped the contract. “For two months, you are a full band member. You will continue to receive royalties on anything you record or write for the duration of the copyright.”

“It’s a ridiculously generous contract,” Jonas muttered. “Contract musicians and writing consultants are generally paid a flat rate under work-for-hire laws. I’ve never seen anything like this for a short-term gig.”

Georgie raised her eyebrows at Alex. “Really?”

He shrugged. “We negotiated the terms last night. This is merely the formal contract.”

“If this isn’t customary—” she started.

“We’re in a crisis. It isn’t customary to simultaneously lose two musicians out of five.”

“Six,” Jonas muttered.

“Rhiannon is a contractor under work-for-hire guidelines,” Xan told him.

“Hell, if Georgie is a band member, Rhiannon should be, too.”

“Just whom are you advocating for, Jonas?” His mild tone belied what he was actually saying.

Jonas set his mouth in a hard line and went back to texting on his phone.

Alex turned back to Georgie, his face still as impassive as marble. “The songs that we’ve already written together are copyrighted in both our names. Future music will be the same.”

Georgie went back to reading. The Non-Disclosure Agreement was outlined in excruciating detail, including but not limited to any communication in any form—electronic, print, or methods not therein described or currently in existence, and the ban was worldwide. She couldn’t even discuss him or the band by using smoke signals in Siberia or telepathic waves on Alpha Centauri. “Guess I won’t be writing my memoirs.”

“No,” Alex said. “No memoirs.”

Georgie saw the flaw in the logic. “How am I going to do interviews if I can’t discuss anything about the band?”

Jonas said, “You’ll have a list of approved topics and talking points.”

“That sounds spontaneous,” she grumbled.

Jonas looked confused. “It’s how all interviews are run. You can’t have musicians puking out anything they want to talk about. They’d just incriminate themselves for all sorts of things, like smuggling drugs over international borders up their asses.”

Georgie frowned at him.

“Okay, you wouldn’t do that,” Jonas said. “But can you imagine Grayson with a live mic and no piece of paper in front of him?”

“Grayson is in rehab,” Alex said, twisting one of the silver death’s head rings on his fingers.

“Yeah, but still,” Jonas sighed.

While Georgie had been standing in line for a latte that morning in the hotel lobby, she had seen Alex escort Grayson, their bass player, to a limo that morning, shake his hand, and stand on the sidewalk as it drove away. He had strode back into the hotel without looking back, his jaw set.

She asked, “What’s this ‘other and sundry duties?’”

“Anything band-related that I think is necessary,” Alex said, still fidgeting with his rings.

She didn’t want to make a suggestive comment, not after last night, not when she wanted to break down and sob or punch him in the face, she wasn’t sure which. “Okay.”

Alex’s eyes flicked up at her. “Band-related,” he stressed. “Keep reading.”

Georgie skimmed through the document, slowing only when she came to a section titled, “No Fraternization Among Band Members.”

The language was brutal. The consequences were severe, from fines to summary dismissal with no recourse. “This clause is pretty rough.”

“You wanted it,” Alex said, still staring at his hands.

“So what happens to you?”

“I beg your pardon?”

“If you make a pass at me, I get fired and lose my college financing. What about you?”

He looked up from his hands, and for the first time, lines of anger creased around his eyes. The anger spread through his face and body, tightening his arms and clenching his hands into fists. In a guttural British accent, Xan said, “I’ll break up the band. I’ll cancel all future concerts and pay off the venues. I’ll walk away.”

“Is that in the contract?” she asked.

“I’ll have it added.”

Jonas stared at Xan, his lip curling up. “You can’t break up the band over something like this.”

“Watch me.”

“You can’t throw away everything you’ve worked for,” Jonas insisted.

Xan didn’t look away from Georgie. His dark eyes narrowed, and he bit down on the words. “She’s right. It’s not fair for her to take all the risk. If I violate that clause, I’ll burn Killer Valentine to the ground.”

Blog Tour; Kick Push

Blog Tour & Review

Title: Kick, Push

Author: Jay McLean

Release Day: August 4, 2015

There’s a single defining moment within every skater.
It lasts only a second. Two if you're good.
 Three if you’re really good.
It’s the moment you’re in the air, your board somewhere beneath you, and  nothing but wind surrounds you.
It’s the feeling of being airborne.

The sixteen-year-old version of me would’ve said it was the greatest feeling in the world.

Then at seventeen, I had my son.
And every single second became a defining moment.
Even the ones that consisted of heartbreak when his mother left us.

 Seventeen. Single. Dad.

That’s what my life became.
Yet, every day, I managed to find that feeling of being airborne.
Or at least I convinced myself I did.
But I lied—to myself and to everyone around me.
Until she showed up; Tanned skin, raven dark hair, and eyes the color of emeralds.

You know what sucks about being in the air?

Coming down from the high.
Sometimes you land on the board and nail the trick.
Then kick, push, and coast away.
Other times you fall.
You fall hard.

And those are the times when it’s not as easy to get back up, dust off your pads and try again.

Especially when the girl with the emerald eyes becomes your drug...

And you become her poison.

This is the hardest review I've ever had to write. It's also the most meaningful

I've just spent the last three hours crying my eyes out while reading. Why? Because this book was the hardest book  I have ever read. The hardest book I will probably ever read. Ever.

Normally I read a book and wait to write a review. For ARCs I give myself a few days time so I can gather my thoughts. But I can't with this book.

I guess I just have to coast my way through it.

Y'all know that I'm a huge fan of Jay McLean. I've read all of her books. I've cried through most of her books.

Jay talks about real life shit. She talks about hard shit. Every single one of her books is real. (We just need to agree now that Boy Toy is our dirty pleasure)

I cried through everyone of her books, except two. One was Boy Toy (Because I was too busy laughing at that shit). The other was Combative, because I was too busy having a miniature heart attack.

If you read my reviews then you know that I'm an emotional reader. You know that I cry. You know that I've been devastated by books before.

You know that I've been destroyed by books before. Just look at my GoodReads updates.

I can't even begin to process what this book has done to me. This book was raw pure emotion. This book is love, heart break, family. But it's also something I can't even describe.

You have to read the book to fully understand what this book is.

This is more than a love story. This is more than a heart break. This is more than a fucked up family.

 It's simply more.

I thought Where The Road Takes me would be the hardest book of Jay's I would ever read. I was wrong.

 I was so wrong

Kick, Push is more than a journey. It's more than an experience.

It's something great. I've read books that have changed my outlook on the world before. I have read books that have changed how I see myself. How I see my life.

This book. It didn't do any of that.

This book made me feel something. I don't know what. All I now is that it was something

If you read Where The Road Takes Me, then you've met Josh Fire Trucking Warden. If you haven't then you need to. You need the backstory. You need to know the emotions of that book, before you can try to understand the emotions of this one.

This is going to be one of my longer reviews. Because I just don't know what to say. So I'll ramble on until I've convinced you to go and buy it.

I don't give spoilers, I never have. I'm not going to outline the characters or the book for you. Because I can't. You have to see it for yourself.

Jay packed so much emotion in this book, I thought I was going to break. I did break.

I'm shaking because I spent the past three hours crying while reading this. I love Jay, I love how she can make me laugh and cry at the same time. What I don't like is that now, I don't even know.

I laughed at the right times, but I also cried at the right times. And the wrong ones.

And I've joked before, but I seriously think that I broke the kindle highlight feature. I highlighted so much. I can't even share most of that shit with you because it would break the no spoiler rule.

I know I've broken it before with a few of my quotes, and some hints in my reviews. But I can't. Not just because I'll be breaking rule #1 which is to not be an asshole.

But because I can't think about how you would feel if you know what I do before you read it.

I'm going to give you quotes. Quotes that I love. Ones that won't get me sent to the place where assholes go after they die.

This is more than just a book. This is about a boy, who becomes a man, who steals whatever was left of my heart.

This is about a girl, who becomes a woman, who breaks my soul.

This book is about an author, who broke herself apart, and gave us something great.

This is not just another book. Not to her, not to us. Not to the characters, who are real dammit, don't tell me they're not!

 This is life

This is what I've been looking for.

This right here. This is why I love doing what I do. I love sharing a piece of me with you. Because I read books. And the authors who write those books? They share a piece of them with us.

Kick, Push is the greatest thing I've ever read. It is the hardest book I have ever read.

I spent a whole blog post rambling on. But you know what? It was worth it. This book was worth it.

I hope that everyone who reads this book realizes how worth it, it really is.

*Quote- "Just breathe. Because the simple act of breathing is a constant struggle when you live your life in fear." - The Girl (I'm not giving you her name. I didn't know until I read the book, you don't know until you read the book)
"Some things will always be beautiful, even in the face of death" -The Girl (So fucking true {also it's a miracle! That was the first time I've said fuck this whole post})

"There are some sacrifices greater than love. And some loves greater than any sacrifice. Tommy's greater than both." -Josh

"Sometimes the most basic of moments become your most treasured memories." -Josh

"There's a big difference between being happy and being selfish, Choose to be happy. Fire truck the rest." -Chloe

"Kick. Push. Coast. Time to coast, son" -Henry Warden

That's more quotes than I usually give, but they all mean something. Read the book to find out.
