Book Talk Review; What Makes a Man

Synopsis

Every action has a reaction.
First impressions don’t always tell the story in tow.
When Dom meets Nyla, it’s under dangerous, deceiving circumstances. But when the truth comes out, Nyla is certain Dom is the ‘good book’ she needs. She's convinced the pages they’ll write together will give her the happy ending she expects. They just have to make it out of the ghetto that’s been sucking the life from Dom since he can remember. He knows the man he wants to be will never develop in that city. People change everyday and Dom is determined to change for her, but there’s one thing he can’t change and it’s the one thing she can’t accept.
The world keeps turning through the choices they make and they learn the hard way that every action has a reaction.
"Everyone deserves the chance to write the pages to their own book."

Review

What Makes a Man is an interesting story that has some truly great life lessons and also asks some important questions. Do we grow up according to our surroundings? Are we products of circumstance? Or do we get to choose our paths?

These are questions Dom faces every single day. Following in the footsteps of his hood rat friends, he falls into a cycle of making countless bad decisions. That is, until he meets Nyla and his life begins to change. She's convinced Dom can be a better person if he wants to be.... and he does. He wants to be good, for her and for his family. He wants to get out of the crime ridden city which has held him captive most of his life, he wants a fresh start and he wants to build a promising future. But these wants require changing his ways. As Dom struggles to separate himself from the destructive path he has led, situations arise that truly test his resolve. Can he really write the pages of his book, or is his destiny already written?

What Makes a Man was not short on shocking twists, that's for sure. It's not a typical 'boy meets girl and falls in love' or 'they live happily ever after' kind of story. No, this book deals with hard truths, bad decisions and tragic repercussions. Admist all the angst and drama there is also a story about blossoming hope.

Overall, I loved the premise, but I felt that because there were so many scenarios and storylines to paint the picture of this book they ended up feeling very rushed. Each situation was dealt with so quickly that I didn't really have the time to properly emotionally connect to the characters or what was happening. I wasn't completely detached, but I wasn't as emotionally invested as I would have liked to be. However, I will definitely be reading book 2! I wasn't expecting a cliffhanger and I do need to know if Dom gets the ending he so desperately wants.
